The Office of State Human Resources announced today that if the shutdown is not averted, about 200 state employees will be furloughed. These workers, affected by the federal situation, will be without pay — a measure described as the last resort after other options have been exhausted. As the state faces additional federal cuts and tighter financial constraints, the options to lessen the impact are quickly diminishing.
In a statement obtained by OSHR, State Human Resources Director Staci Meyer expressed the tangible frustrations of the situation, alluding to the disruption the furloughs will cause. Offering resources to affected employees, the OSHR is standing by its commitment to transparency and support, even as they navigate these difficult waters wrought by federal inaction. "This situation is frustrating, and we are aware of the disruption it causes," Meyer stated, reflecting a sentiment that likely resonates throughout the affected workforce.
Governor Josh Stein echoed these concerns and his displeasure with the conditions leading to the furloughs. "The decision to implement furloughs is not one that has been taken lightly, and I deeply regret the hardship it will cause," Stein told OSHR. His administration vows to do everything within its power to push for a quick resolution to the federal deadlock.
During this fitful period, the state employees furloughed will not be receiving wages until the federal shutdown is rectified. However, there is a silver lining as the State Health Plan payments made in advance ensure that these same employees will maintain their healthcare coverage throughout October. The OSHR is directing these workers, now facing financial adversities, toward the Furlough Resource Center for guidance on unemployment benefits or possibly seeking temporary employment through avenues like Temporary Solutions.
To further buffer the impact, access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) remains intact for both the furloughed employees and their immediate family members. The confidential service, as described by OSHR, is designed to help employees confronting personal or work-life challenges by providing "confidential referrals to appropriate resources."
