The North Carolina Retirement Systems (NCRS) is gearing up for a major digital overhaul to their ORBIT member portal, aiming to launch a new single sign-on (SSO) login system in early 2026. By partnering with ID.me, a widely recognized digital identity platform, NCRS plans to simplify account access for state retirees while enhancing security measures. "We want our members to know their information is safe with us and that they can get to that information easily," Treasurer Brad Briner stated, according to a press release.
The ORBIT platform, integral to retirees for managing their benefits, is set to discard the cumbersome multiple passwords and security questions system currently in place. The replacement, SSO via ID.me, not only aims to eliminate login fatigue but, promises a secure and more rapid entry point into the portal. Sam Watts, Executive Director of NCRS, highlighted the user experience, saying "The streamlined process will lead to a better user experience for members of the Retirement Systems," as mentioned on the NC Department of State Treasurer release. Most members may already be familiar with ID.me due to its federal usage for services like Social Security.
The readiness of NCRS to implement this modernization reflects their ongoing commitment to staying up-to-date with technological advancements and cybersecurity. As a part of the initiative, members will be advised to set up or confirm their ID.me accounts ahead of the scheduled launch to assure an uninterrupted transition. Step-by-step guidelines and updates are expected to be available on the NCRS website starting November, assuring members are aptly informed.
NCRS executive leadership is poised to discuss the enhancements in great detail at the upcoming TSERS and LGERS Board of Trustees meeting. With the backing from the Office of State Budget & Management, the project was propelled to the top of the priority list acknowledging the value it provides to North Carolina's public employees.
