Commuters in the Oklahoma City area are facing a slew of construction-related disruptions, with several highway projects narrowing lanes and closing ramps across major roads and interchanges. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has announced significant narrowing and closures on US-77, I-40, I-35, and other state highways, which are set to impact daily commutes and travel plans until as late as 2026, according to an ODOT advisory released last week.

Effective immediately, travel on US-77 will face intermittent lane closures nightly through early November for resurfacing, while the eastbound I-40 off-ramp to northbound US-81 will shut down Thursday morning it won't reopen until 6 a.m. Friday, causing potential delays for morning traffic. Meanwhile, north and southbound I-35 and ramps between Memorial Rd. and US-77/2nd St. in Edmond will be periodically narrowed through summer 2025 as crews work on resurfacing and bridge upgrades.

Long-term work is also set to continue at the I-35 and SH-9W interchange in Norman, with the goal of creating a Diverging Diamond Interchange and widening I-35. This project necessitates the narrowing of SH-9W to one lane in each direction at I-35 near Goldsby through 2026. Alongside, the I-240 interchange improvement project is scheduled through 2025, resulting in lane narrowing on I-240, lane closures on Crossroads Blvd., and the shutdown of S.E. 74th St./I-240 Service Rd. through spring 2026.

Further disruptions include the narrowing of SH-4 between Wilshire Blvd. and SH-3/NW Expressway, the narrowing of east and westbound Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. at their intersection in Edmond through Spring 2026, and the closure of SH-152 at Banner Rd., near Union City, through 2025 which aims to ease future traffic flow but for now it piles on to commuter woes. To navigate around these obstructions, travelers can make use of alternate routes such as US-81, I-44, and local roads as specified in the ODOT's detour suggestions.

Travelers are encouraged to plan their commutes accordingly and stay up to date with the latest travel advisories from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
