Rep. Ajay Pittman, D-Oklahoma City, led an Interim Study at the State Capitol to address food insecurity in Oklahoma. The study, held last month, brought together state agencies, tribal nations, health professionals, and community organizations to develop plans to improve food access across the state.

According to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the study discussed practical steps such as retail incentives, refrigeration grants for small stores, and better transportation coordination to connect residents with clinics and grocery stores. Participants also explored expanding farm-to-community programs and strengthening food distribution systems.

Julie Barlow of FreshRx Oklahoma highlighted successful collaborations between healthcare providers and community organizations that improve both nutrition and public health. The study also examined ways to track progress and streamline benefit programs such as SNAP and WIC.

Stephanie Harris, Chief Impact Officer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, noted that one in six residents faces food insecurity. The study concluded with plans to propose legislation supporting healthy-food retail incentives, assisting small stores in food deserts, and expanding local farm partnerships. Rep. Pittman stated that upcoming efforts will combine community collaboration and data-based planning to create long-term solutions for food access across Oklahoma.
