In a concerted crackdown on crime in Southwest Georgia, ten individuals have been held to account for their involvement in armed drug trafficking, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The investigation, a part of Operation Take Back America, saw a substantial haul of drugs and dangerous weapons, including 30 firearms and two machine guns, being seized by law enforcement agencies.

U.S. Attorney William R. “Will” Keyes affirmed the commitment to community safety stating, “This case amplifies the kinds of efforts across the Middle District of Georgia to get guns and drugs off our streets and make the communities we serve safer for everyone.” The case demonstrates a vigorous pursuit to hold the most egregious offenders accountable at the federal level, as part of an initiative, that, involves agencies from all levels of law enforcement.

The press release details the involvement of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and others in this coordinated operation. GBI Director Chris Hosey highlighted the importance of interagency collaboration, “Together, we are making our neighborhoods safer by removing violent offenders, dangerous weapons and deadly narcotics from our streets.”

The defendants, mostly hailing from Albany, Georgia, are in various stages of the judicial process, with some awaiting sentencing, and others already sentenced. For instance, Devin Covon Randle was sentenced last Wednesday to serve 192 months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine. The consequences for these crimes are severe, with mandatory minimum sentences stretching to 10 years, and the maximum punishment amounting to life imprisonment for several of the accused.

Noteworthy, is the case of Rasheen Malik Garrett, a fugitive still at large and charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances and other offenses, potentially facing a life sentence. Authorities urge the public to report any information regarding Garrett's whereabouts, which can be done anonymously to the GBI.

The coordinated strike on this network began with surveillance in 2023, leading to a series of controlled methamphetamine and firearm purchases from July to December that year. Ultimately, the efforts culminated in raids at various Albany hotels, yielding further contraband, including methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine, solidifying the case against the ten defendants. Operation Take Back America continues its nationwide efforts to repel illegal activities and protect communities from violent crimes and narcotics trafficking, with the full weight of the Department of Justice and its affiliates.

Presiding over the case is Chief U.S. District Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner, reminding all parties involved that in the federal system, there is no parole. The investigation was the collective work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), GBI, with support from the DEA, the ADSIU, and LCSO. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Redavid is representing the Government in prosecuting the case.
