An Orange County man, Carlos Yadiel Baez-Nieves, has been given a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murders of two women in East Orange County last year. Baez-Nieves, 26, was convicted of the strangulation deaths of Fatia Flowers, 41, and Nichole Daniels, 44, whose bodies were both discovered near an intersection in East Orange County, across from each other.
After a thorough investigation, detectives attributed the murders to Baez-Nieves through evidence such as surveillance footage of his white Ford F-150 and his subsequent confession following an unrelated traffic stop. ClickOrlando reported Baez-Nieves "targeted the most vulnerable women he could — transient women who traded sex for money." The sheriff’s office suggested that the methodical nature of the crimes raised concerns that Baez-Nieves could have evolved into a serial killer had he not been captured.
"I’m confident that through their vigilance in these cases, our detectives prevented Baez-Nieves from becoming a prolific serial killer," said Sheriff John Mina in a statement detailed by FOX 35 Orlando. The sheriff’s office regarded Baez-Nieves's actions as indicative of a man who thought he was targeting women unlikely to be missed by society.
The backstory of Baez-Nieves, who moved to Central Florida from Puerto Rico in 2020, has been living in proximity to where the crimes occurred. Detectives have hinted they are not ruling out his potential link to other unsolved cases, emphasizing that Baez-Nieves chose the same intersection for dumping his victims, a detail which has yet to be explained by the authorities.
