Oct. 30 in Oregon now bears the name Weatherization Day, as announced by Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS), a detail confirmed in a recent statement. Marking a tribute to the efforts making homes safer and more energy efficient, Governor Kotek’s signed proclamation gives due credit to the weatherization initiatives that have been propelling Oregon's stride toward energy sufficiency and better living conditions for its lower-income residents.

The program is not just about padding walls or patching up drafts, since its launch in 1979; it has partnered with agencies across Oregon's 36 counties saving families money, aiding the environment, and reportedly adding a touch of comfort for those in need. Citing the OHCS executive director, Andrea Bell, “The OHCS weatherization program reduces energy costs for families, benefits the economy by supporting good paying jobs, and improves health outcomes,” pointing out the ripple effect such actions have far beyond the confines of a newly insulated home, as per the OHCS website.

Figures from last year, 2024, serve to illustrate the scale of such efforts—over a thousand homes were weatherized, delivering an average of $761 in savings per household on their energy bills. These are numbers that count most for those hardest hit by energy costs: the elderly, children, and individuals with disabilities.

Take, for instance, the anecdote from Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) shared in the OHCS announcement; two older residents in a 1996 manufactured home faced the winter's bite with a broken heat pump and a makeshift wood stove, only to be rescued by YCAP's comprehensive weatherization assistance, with one of the residents expressing, “I have had the most excellent experience with our YCAP updates. The whole team went beyond all expectations and did their very best. We were in great need and now are enjoying a warm and comfortable living space."

These touches transform lives, a sentiment echoed by YCAP’s Executive Director Alexandra Ball, “Our home weatherization program has a profound impact on the people we serve, particularly for vulnerable populations,” as mentioned on the OHCS website.
