Leaders in Oregon have united in response to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals' decision to grant an administrative stay on the deployment of the National Guard to Portland. According to the City of Portland, Governor Tina Kotek, along with Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Mayor Keith Wilson, has welcomed the court's directive, which temporarily halts President Trump's aim to use military force in the city of Portland, leaving the Oregon National Guard under a Title 10 federal designation but preventing their immediate mobilization.
In a recent announcement, Governor Kotek said, "Importantly, this order keeps the Trump Administration from military intervention in Portland. The facts on the ground have not changed. There is no need for military intervention in Oregon. There is no insurrection in Portland. No threat to national security. Oregon is our home, not a military target." Kotek also emphasized the need for Oregonians to maintain peaceful discourse, vowing to continue resisting what she describes as an abuse of power by President Trump.
Attorney General Dan Rayfield responded to the situation by highlighting the continuity of peace on the streets of Portland despite the federal status of the National Guard, as stated on the city's website. "Today's order from the Ninth Circuit doesn't change anything on the ground," Rayfield remarked, he indicated relief at the prevention of a federal escalation and called the community to action in order to expedite the Guard's return to their homes by maintaining the city's peaceful ethos.
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson aligned with the Governor and Attorney General, emphasizing that no additional troops are needed in Portland. He highlighted that local police are focused on protecting residents' right to peaceful protest and maintaining community safety. Mayor Wilson reaffirmed his opposition to federal militarization, expressing support for community-led public safety approaches instead of federal intervention.
Oregon’s state and city leaders have expressed opposition to the federal involvement in Portland. They are preparing to present their arguments against the deployment of the National Guard in today’s court hearing. Governor Kotek, Attorney General Rayfield, and Mayor Wilson have stated their commitment to maintaining the state’s authority and ensuring public safety.
