In response to the Trump administration’s failure to release critical food assistance, Governor Tina Kotek on Wednesday announced a $5 million emergency support package for food banks across Oregon and declared a statewide food-access emergency. State officials emphasized that the move aims to help the 757,000 Oregonians at risk of losing their SNAP benefits on Saturday, according to the Oregon Legislature.
Oregon Senate Democrats praised the action while urging the federal government to fulfill its responsibility to taxpayers. Meanwhile, local communities and organizations, particularly in Southern Oregon, have mobilized to support vulnerable residents amid the ongoing federal inaction, as reported by the Oregon Legislature.
Senator Janeen Sollman has voiced concern over the use of food assistance funding in political negotiations, stating, “It is cruel to use food assistance funding as a political bargaining chip.” She urged residents to support local food banks, including Centro Cultural Food Mercado in Western Washington County, as demand for assistance increases. With federal funding delays continuing, state and community organizations, along with measures announced by Governor Tina Kotek and support from Senate Democrats, are working to meet local food security needs, as stated by the Oregon Legislature.
