According to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), widespread power outages affected over 1,700 customers across the county today. Neighborhoods from Torrey Pines to Solana Beach and Logan Heights were left in the dark.
Initial reports, as gathered from SDG&E's outage map and details released, indicate that an unidentified object made contact with an electrical system, truncating power in the areas of Mission Bay and Pacific Beach. However, service was swiftly restored by 11 AM for these locales, including La Jolla, Encinitas, and surrounding communities. Despite the swift action for some areas, the causes of the remaining outages remain a mystery, and the investigation is ongoing.
Restoration times for the affected areas were projected for early to mid-afternoon, depending on the location. Notably, as NBC San Diego reported, an estimated 230 customers around Torrey Pines were left counting the minutes until their estimated restoration of 3 PM, an inconvenience tied to severe weather. Over in La Mesa, power had been sapped away since the early morning hours, with SDG&E citing equipment damage as the culprit, and a 3 PM restoration as the goal.
Meanwhile, SDG&E urged residents to be prepared for unforeseen outages as the county braced for rain and high winds, a likely contributor to the interrupted service. However, it had not conclusively been determined as the day's disruptive force. Customers were advised to monitor the SDG&E outage map for updates, according to a statement provided by CBS 8. Inconsistent weather, as it often does, continues to pose a complex challenge to power grids and utilities, demanding that residents stay alert and guard against the elements' whims.
