On the evening of October 23rd, Oxnard police made an arrest that brought a loaded firearm off the streets, according to a press release from the Oxnard Police Department. As the city grapples with gang violence, specifically targeting known, active gang members has become a priority for the local law enforcement. Mario Lopez, a 35-year-old resident of Oxnard, was the latest individual to be ensnared in this crackdown, found with a concealed Glock .40-caliber handgun on North Anita Ave.
The encounter between Lopez and officers from the Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) was initially over a mundane parking violation; however, the minor infraction quickly escalated into a more serious situation. "During the contact Lopez was found to be in possession of a loaded Glock, 40-caliber handgun, concealed in his waistband," the Oxnard Police Department reported. He was arrested for various firearm-related charges in a city increasingly concerned by the proliferation of guns in the hands of gang members.
The Oxnard Police Department has reiterated its dedication to reducing gang crimes and gun violence in the community. This commitment is enacted through a proactive approach to law enforcement, focusing on areas and individuals known for gang affiliation. The recent arrest is a part of that larger strategy, which leverages both the Special Enforcement Unit and the Violent Crimes Unit in a collective effort to stem the tide of gang-related violence.
Authorities have reached out to the public for assistance, seeking information that may lead to further decreases in criminal activity related to gangs and firearms. "Anyone with information regarding this case or other criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Oxnard Police Department at (805) 385-7600, or online via the Oxnard Police Department’s website," the department communicated, emphasizing the availability of anonymous tip options through both their website and Ventura County Crime Stoppers. Concerned citizens have multiple avenues to contribute, and by doing so, possibly play a role in enhancing the safety of their neighborhoods.
The Oxnard Police Department's website offers a clear avenue for residents to report suspicious activity, a crucial component of community policing. Those who prefer to remain anonymous have the option of calling Ventura County Crime Stoppers or submitting tips through text or email.
