Peoria Police have arrested a suspect following the fatal shooting of a Surprise man last weekend. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that around 8 p.m. on October 11, officers were called to the scene near 95th and Peoria Avenues after receiving reports of gunshots. They discovered 33-year-old James Durham lying in the street with a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Witnesses saw several people fleeing in a red car after the shooting. The officers, in pursuing leads, pulled over a car that matched the witness's description, detaining the occupants for further investigation. "The occupants of the vehicle were detained for further investigation. One of them was identified as the suspect," police detailed in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. 46-year-old Henry Juarez-Garcia from Peoria was the man arrested and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
While the incident's motive remains under wraps, police have suggested the shooting seems to be isolated. There is reportedly no threat lingering to the public, and as detectives continue their investigation, AZ Family has confirmed that Juarez-Garcia is also being charged with possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, possession of a deadly weapon that's been defaced, and possession of dangerous drugs.
Despite there having been no official narrative on what led to Durham's tragic death, the Peoria Police Department believes the shooting did not pose a larger threat to community safety. "Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community," as AZ Family has underscored, pointing out that there has been a scarcity of details released about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For those in possession of relevant information, whether it be a photo or video relevant to the breaking news event, local news outlets are urging members of the public to come forth and share their submissions to provide clarity to the ongoing investigation.
