Phoenix residents and officials gathered for a dual-purpose event that merged environmental consciousness with social advocacy, as the City of Phoenix in unison with Arizona Public Service (APS) held its 6th annual Planting Hope event, per a report on the city's official newsroom. The focus was not only on greening the Edison-Eastlake Community with over 50 new trees but also on driving the dialogue on domestic violence, a critical issue that often shadows behind closed doors.

Mayor Kate Gallego commented on the communal spirit saying, "Planting Hope is a powerful example of what happens when residents, City departments, and community partners come together with a shared purpose", her words reflecting the dual aim of this initiative, beautifying the neighborhood and raising awareness simultaneously for domestic violence and available support resources, as per the City of Phoenix website. District 8 Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington weighed in, heralding the transformative power of engaged communities and the beauty in the neighborhood's resilience, thanks in no small part to the leadership of its residents and the enduring partnerships forged.

Reaffirming the broader commitment to community development, the City's Housing Department spearheaded a transformative journey, utilizing over $42 million in Choice Neighborhoods Grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), destined to reshape the Edison-Eastlake area; Titus Mathew, Housing Department Director, emphasized the strength of the comprehensive, resident-driven initiative, his department's role in this venture transcending the construction of new buildings, embedding in each project the seeds of endurance, hope, and communal well-being.

Ever since its inception in 2022, APS' Community Tree Program has contributed significantly to greener landscapes in schools, neighborhoods, and municipalities, particularly those with low-income households, planting upwards of 2,100 trees to date. Tina Marie Tentori, APS Director of Community Affairs, highlighted the company's commitment to reinvesting in the communities they serve by detailing the program's objectives and its specific focus on aiding areas that are often overlooked and underserved. Moreover, in alignment with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this year's event also featured purple blooms among the trees, an embodiment of the ongoing solidarity in the fight against domestic violence.

Gratitude was also extended to BLICK Art Supplies and the Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation for their contributions of art supplies and sunscreen respectively, ensuring the volunteers were equipped to not only plant but also partake in crafting messages of support and protection.
