Tragedy unfolded at a Phoenix senior citizens' community when a 63-year-old woman, Michelle Semenjuk, was fatally shot on Sunday afternoon, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Phoenix police received reports of the incident near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road and found Semenjuk shot and unresponsive. Despite being rushed to an hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
According to witness accounts, a man was seen leaving the victim's apartment around the time of the shooting. Salvador Najera Jr., aged 58, was later identified as the suspect when he phoned family members, allegedly admitting to the shooting, before fleeing the scene. Arizona's Family further reports that neighbors described the area as typically quiet and Semenjuk as a kind individual known for repairing electric bikes and scooters.
Phoenix PD later arrested Najera, who admitted to the crime and his status as a "prohibited possessor," implying unlawful possession of the firearm used. He has been charged with murder and misconduct involving weapons. The relationship between Najera and the victim, as well as the motive behind the shooting, remains under investigation.
As law enforcement pursued the suspect, residents of the complex experienced a shelter-in-place order, which was eventually lifted around 7:30 p.m., despite the suspect initially being at large. "The guy, I think it’s her son, was still yelling ‘Help! Help!’” recounted Lawanda Holdbrook in a statement obtained by Arizona's Family, mistakenly suggestive of an immediate family connection which was not corroborated by official sources. Louie Melendez, a neighbor, expressed his shock to the same publication, stating, “It was a nightmare. It’s a total nightmare."
This incident continues to be subject to an ongoing investigation, as the community seeks answers and justice unfolds.
