The Phoenix Police Department is actively seeking public feedback on its proposed "Youth Interactions" policy, which is designed to enhance the way law enforcement officers engage with the city's young residents. According to the department's announcement, the new policy will focus on building trust, encouraging cooperation, and reducing fear in interactions between police and youth.
The department’s initiative outlines strategies for officers to effectively communicate with minors, particularly those who might be currently in crisis, live with disabilities, or require more nuanced cooperation than their adult counterparts. It acknowledges the necessity to sometimes swiftly remove youth from potentially traumatic situations to prevent further psychological harm. The policy also seeks to shift some emphasis away from enforcement actions.
This call for public input represents an opportunity for Phoenix residents to directly influence how their police department interacts with younger members of the community. The effort to gather comments began on Thursday, October 23, and will remain open until Saturday, November 22. Individuals interested in reviewing the draft policy and providing their feedback can do so by clicking a dedicated feedback button found at the bottom of the policy draft on the Phoenix Police Department's webpage.
