A dramatic chase involving a stolen box truck that led to a crash and subsequent heroics by deputies unfolded in Pierce County last weekend. According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, two suspects fled from deputies in a stolen vehicle late Sunday night, initiating a high-intensity pursuit.
The incident began when deputies attempted to stop the truck near 120th St East in the Bonney Lake area, as reported by KIRO7. The driver, a 42-year-old man, and his 38-year-old passenger chose to accelerate away instead of yielding. In their struggle to stop the runaway truck, deputies performed three precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers, the last of which successfully terminated the flight of the suspects. The final immobilization caused the vehicle to careen off the road and crash into a grove of trees. The aftermath of the chase required deputies to switch roles from pursuers to rescuers as the box truck began smoking, trapping the suspects inside. Deputies smashed through the windshield to free the men, whose screams could be heard from within the cab. Following the extraction, the suspects received medical treatment for their injuries.
