Attorney General Kwame Raoul recently secured a 15-year prison sentence for a Perry County man on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material. The convicted, Larry W. Morrison, a 57-year-old resident of Pinckneyville, Illinois, pled guilty to three Class 2 felony counts of child pornography, as reported on October 22nd by the Illinois Attorney General's Office News. Morrison's sentencing by Perry County Circuit Court Judge Campanella represents a continued effort to clamp down on online exploitation.

During a search in June 2024 at Morrison's home, investigators found evidence of illegal material that led to his arrest. This case is a part of a broader initiative led by AG Raoul, in collaboration with local and federal agencies, to apprehend those involved in the online trading and downloading of child abuse images. "The child victims of these horrific crimes are exploited each time images are shared, and holding perpetrators accountable can be crucial for the victims, their families and their recoveries from trauma," Raoul stated in a press release. Perry County State's Attorney David Searby Jr. appreciated the support from the state, noting, "This includes the beginning of an investigation, all of the way through final disposition and certainly makes a difference."

Raoul's office oversees the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, supported by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, which focuses on investigating child exploitation crimes and training law enforcement. The task force has been instrumental, particularly considering the 11% increase in CyberTip reports it received in 2024 over the previous year. The task force, according to the same news release, is a coalition of over 200 law enforcement agencies and has contributed to more than 1,000 arrests of alleged sexual predators since 2019.

For members of the community looking to report suspected child exploitation, AG Raoul reminds the public that reports can be submitted online at cybertipline.com. In addition, reports of child abuse can be made at dcfsonlinereporting.dcfs.illinois.gov, while local child advocacy centers can be listed at childrensadvocacycentersofillinois.org. Vanessa Minor of the Attorney General's Criminal Division led the prosecution in the Morrison case, highlighting the continuous commitment of Illinois' legal officials to safeguarding children against abuse and bringing offenders to justice.
