As Halloween festivities wind down and Plymouth residents look at their jack-o'-lanterns timidly starting to slump, the city offers a solution that's part sustainable, part animal buffet. From Nov. 1-16, locals can drop off their used pumpkins, gourds, and apples at the Plymouth Maintenance Facility parking lot in an eco-friendly effort to repurpose these decaying decorations. According to an announcement on the City of Plymouth's official website, the facility, located at 14900 23rd Ave. N., will have a designated dumpster with a "Pumpkin Drop" sign located on the west side.
Before saying goodbye to their holiday garnishes, participants are asked to strip away the candles – this is not just a gesture for the sake of tidiness, but a necessity to ensure the safety and health of the animals that will be feasting on the pumpkin remains. While the initiative encourages recycling of holiday cheer, it's crucial to keep the animals in mind who, inadvertently, could ingest harmful materials if participants overlook this important step. Notably, painted pumpkins are also invited to the feast – as long as they're free of any non-edible adornments.
The Pumpkin Drop is more than just a practical method for waste reduction; it's a bridge between seasonal celebration and agricultural utility. Plymouth residents have the opportunity to divert their organic waste from landfills, contributing to a more sustainable cycle of use and reuse. When speaking of the program, the City of Plymouth reminds participants, "The Pumpkin Drop offers the community an opportunity to turn old holiday decorations into food for farm animals."
So, before dumping their seasonal squashes in the trash, Plymouth citizens should consider taking a short trip to the Maintenance Facility. There, they can deposit their pumpkins, ensuring they will be transformed into a post-Halloween treat for farm animals, clearing the way for a new season's decorations and contributing to an act of environmental stewardship – at the same time, hanging onto some of that autumnal spirit just a little bit longer.
