An early morning police chase ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting at Galveston’s Seawolf Park. The incident began when Hitchcock police attempted a traffic stop and the suspect fled, leading officers on a chase that continued onto Highway 6, I-45, and Galveston Island with support from the Galveston Police Department and Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, FOX 26 Houston reported.
When the suspect exited the vehicle and fired a gun, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation for about 20 minutes, KHOU reported. At some point, the suspect pointed the weapon at law enforcement, prompting an officer to fire. The suspect was struck and later died at the hospital.
No injuries were reported among civilians or officers. The identity of the suspect and the officer involved has not been released. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, while the Galveston Police Department will conduct an internal review.
