Attention Portland drivers: expect some road snags next week on West Burnside Street. According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, signal upgrades and new ADA-compliant curb ramps are coming to the intersection with SW Fourth Avenue as part of ongoing improvements. PBOT announced these changes will begin Oct. 14, with flaggers on-site to guide traffic during the signal installation.
Starting Tuesday, delays are expected in both directions on West Burnside Street, with intermittent holds at the intersection. On Wednesday, traffic will be squeezed down to a single eastbound lane, a move likely to challenge the patience of many commuters. Sidewalk access for pedestrians will be preserved, while transit riders should stay updated by checking with TriMet for any changes to service.
The work is set to continue through the end of the week and could impact travel times, especially since the Broadway Bridge closure on Oct. 13 will already be funneling more traffic over the Burnside Bridge. PBOT's advisory suggests allowing for extra time when travelling and considering alternate routes where possible.
Local access to residences and businesses is said to be maintained throughout the duration of the construction, which remains weather-dependent. Commuters and pedestrians alike are advised to heed flaggers and posted signage in the area to ensure safety. For the latest updates on this project, keep an eye on PBOT's notifications or visit their website.
