Yesterday, a watchful peace loomed over the South Waterfront area in Portland as the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) kept a close eye on the ongoing protest activity surrounding the ICE facility. Equipped with an Incident Command Team, the PPB was prepared for any escalations, though none occurred that warranted arrests, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The PPB team, led by a Crowd Management Incident Commander (CMIC), managed resources such as Dialogue Liaison Officers (DLOs) sporting white shirts to indicate their non-enforcement capacity. Additionally, the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Air Support Unit, and the PPB Sound Truck were all part of the assembly, the latter used for making public safety announcements. Despite the robust police presence, the PPB has, since June, made a total of 47 arrests in relation to the protests.
The PPB has acknowledged the participation of Portland Fire & Rescue and the Oregon State Police with gratitude for their assistance. The PPB's role, as stated by their directive 810.10, is not to enforce immigration laws, but to maintain order and address crimes when necessary.
