Commuters in Portland should brace for some disruptions as a section of SW Sixth Avenue undergoes significant repairs and improvements. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is working on SW Sixth Avenue from SW Sheridan St to SW Broadway, with the paving expected to wrap up by Thursday, Oct. 23, according to a recent announcement. The work schedule runs from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days, and possibly the weekends if necessary.

The project aims not only to repave the road but also to enhance transportation safety and access. A noteworthy upgrade will include the introduction of safer bike lanes between SW Caruthers St and SW Broadway. These lanes will be wider and feature a 2.5-foot painted buffer for additional protection. Matching the travel lane patterns to the north and south segments, drivers can expect a more cohesive flow along SW Sixth Avenue after the restriping efforts.

During the construction period, locals should prepare for rougher roads, traffic delays, and possible detours from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with the potential of some weekend work. Parking will be limited starting 1-2 days before the beginning of the works and will remain restricted throughout the duration of the maintenance. Pedestrian pathways, however, will stay open to ensure access is maintained.

Neighborhood residents and businesses may experience dust, noise, vibrations, and the presence of heavy equipment in the area. The public is urged to heed the traffic control signs and flaggers to ensure the safety of the road crews. This infrastructure project, part of the voter-approved Fixing Our Streets program, is financed by the 10-cent per gallon gas tax, primarily aimed at preventive maintenance to keep the roads in good condition for longer. Transit users should check with TriMet for any service changes during this period.

This work is contingent upon favorable weather, so schedules are subject to alteration. For additional information about Portland's road maintenance or the Fixing Our Streets initiative, visit the PBOT basic road maintenance schedule website.
