Chula Vista's Innovation High School has become the focal point of health concerns after a reported potential exposure to tuberculosis (TB) affecting the local student and staff community. The San Diego County Tuberculosis Prevention and Care Program is spearheading efforts, in collaboration with the school at 310 Broadway, to notify those who may have been exposed to the disease from June 1 to September 4 this year, as detailed in a recent report by the County of San Diego.

Addressing this health scare, the County health officials, along with school administrators, are identifying individuals at the highest risk of infection and are setting up no-cost TB screening; TB, an airborne disease caused by bacteria that can be transmitted when someone with the illness coughs, speaks, sings, or breathes, thus raising alarms in settings like schools where indoor exposure is common and the chances of TB spreading can be higher, especially for those spending prolonged periods in proximity to an infected person.

Although the threat of active TB is serious, it is treatable with current medical interventions. "Effective treatments are available to cure people who are sick from active TB," said a County health representative, per the County of San Diego. For those testing positive without symptoms, the protocol includes a chest X-ray and consultation with a healthcare provider, as the condition could be latent TB—a dormant state of the disease—which can be cured with medication before it potentially activates and poses a greater health risk.
