A Raleigh police officer was injured in a crash last night after their vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 440 near Glenwood Avenue. The incident, which involved the police unit getting struck while attending to an earlier traffic collision, occurred just before 11:00 p.m, as reported by CBS17.
An officer was sent to the scene of an initial accident where a car had struck a parked vehicle. While on duty, the officer was involved in a collision caused by an SUV that did not stop in time. The officer was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, and their condition is expected to improve, according to details shared by ABC11.
After the crash, the eastbound lanes of I-440 were temporarily closed but have now reopened. WRAL reported that both the police cruiser and the SUV sustained significant damage, with the back of the cruiser and front of the SUV described as being badly damaged and destroyed.
The investigation of the crash by Raleigh police and forensic teams lasted over three hours, during which one lane of eastbound I-440 just past Glenwood Avenue remained open.
