Last Friday, crews from the Pattonville Fire Protection District responded to a trash fire at Waste Connections / Champ Landfill. A social media post by the district reported that the Maryland Heights, Robertson, and Orchard Farm Fire Protection Districts assisted with the firefighting efforts. The mutual aid departments transported water from a nearby hydrant to the inner areas of the landfill where the fire was located.

According to a Facebook post by the Pattonville Fire Protection District, Maryland Heights FPD used drones with thermal imaging to provide an aerial view of the scene and monitor the landfill gas well risers. The Paramedic-Firefighters and Landfill Industry Professionals worked together to control the fire while protecting the gas system and nearby area.

During the emergency, Rescue Pumper 4824, acquired with support from the St. Louis Community Foundation, was deployed to assist in managing the situation. This specialized vehicle, specifically designed for landfill fire situations in the district, helped bring the fire under control. In a social media announcement, the department expressed appreciation for the truck’s role, stating, "We are fortunate to have this apparatus in our fleet and are very thankful for its contributions in controlling last night’s incident."

Despite the potential risks of the fire, the response strategy was implemented as planned. Officials from Waste Connections Landfill and New Frontier Materials were present, operating heavy equipment including bulldozers and water trucks.
