The months-long search for a missing elderly man from Crossville has come to a sorrowful conclusion. James Graves, an 84-year-old local who had been missing since April, was found dead in a remote wooded area, as WBIR reported. After a Silver Alert was issued for him by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in early April, multiple agencies collaborated in the search, tirelessly combing the surrounding regions.

On September 24, skeletal remains that were later identified as belonging to Graves were discovered near the Luminary Mountain region of Bledsoe County. While it was hoped that the search would yield a different outcome, the remains were finally linked to Graves after comparison with dental records, as WVLT shared. Having been last seen in Crossville, the discovery paints a grim picture, shedding light on his fate.

Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox spoke to the toll taken on all involved in a statement obtained by WATE, saying, “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Graves.” Cox continued, “This is not the outcome any of us hoped for when this investigation began. We want the Graves family to know they have our prayers and support as they grieve this loss.” Absolutely none of the agencies and volunteers who supported the search expected to be confronted with this tragic resolution.

The exhaustive and collaborative efforts of the Tennessee Highway Patrol Aviation, the Bledsoe County Sheriff's Office, Cumberland County Rescue Squad, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, were publicly thanked by the sheriff’s office in assisting with the search. The statement by the sheriff's received, having participated in multiple capacities, these organizations dedicated resources and time in the hope of finding Graves alive. Now, the community and Graves’ family must come to terms with the loss and seek closure. Still, the work put forth in responsive solidarity by these groups affirms the communal spirit in times of despair.
