A Richmond Hill resident is facing serious charges after a brutal knife attack on a 7 train passenger. Luis Pallchisaca, 21, was indicted on charges of attempted murder, among other felony counts, following an incident that took place at the Mets-Willets Point station in Corona in September. The Queens District Attorney's Office describes the attack as "unprovoked" and "violent," setting the stage for a rigorous prosecution to address the safety of public transportation.
According to a statement from Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Pallchisaca attacked a 25-year-old man by quickly slashing his throat and stabbing him in the back as the victim boarded the subway car. The defendant then allegedly proceeded to hastily flee the scene, leaving the injured man in need of emergency surgery and a chest tube to manage his critical wounds.
The attack has rattled the community, reinforcing fears around transit safety. "A young man experienced every New Yorker’s worst nightmare when he was stabbed in the throat and back in an unprovoked attack on our subway system," Katz said. The dire nature of these charges reflects the gravity with which the criminal justice system is treating such offenses, signaling zero tolerance for violence in transit environments, as per the Queens District Attorney's Office.
If convicted, the charges bring a sentence that could see Pallchisaca imprisoned for up to 25 years. At the time of the arrest, police were able to recover a knife and the clothing he was allegedly wearing during the attack – a sweatshirt, ripped jeans, and black shoes – from his home. This evidence was gathered based on a court-authorized search warrant, which might prove to be critical in the upcoming court proceedings. Pallchisaca has been ordered to return to court on December 8 to face these serious allegations.
The prosecution is being led by Assistant District Attorney Samuel Pellegrino, overseen by Michael Whitney and supported by Deputy Bureau Chiefs Roni Piplani and Timothy Regan. The Queens Transit Crime Squad, with Detective Jerry George at the helm, conducted the investigation leading to Pallchisaca's arrest. Public safety on mass transit remains a paramount concern for authorities, and aggressive prosecutions like this are part of a broader effort to combat violence on New York City's subways.
