As Round Rock's Interstate 35 sees new signage, travelers will now encounter a somber reminder of sacrifice and service. The city has recently installed memorial signs in honor of Officer Charles Whites, a local fallen hero. These signs, according to Round Rock officials, have been placed along both the northbound and southbound lanes within the city limits.
The effort to honor Officer Whites began to coalesce nearly four years ago, with the eventual installation marking the culmination of legislative actions, community coordination, and funding endeavours. On February 25, 2018, an impaired driver tragically struck Officer Whites while he was directing traffic at a crash site. Whites fought bravely but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on April 27, 2018. Police Chief Allen Banks said, "Officer Whites served this city with honor, courage, and compassion," describing the memorial as a tribute "not only to his service but also to the risks our officers face every day in the line of duty," according to the City of Round Rock.
The memorial signs serve as a public acknowledgment and a daily reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers often face. The initiative was backed by the steadfast work of local and state officials, and, as described in a statement obtained by Round Rock's news release, it stands as a lasting tribute to Officer Whites' commitment and dedication towards his community, as noted by the City of Round Rock.
Moreover, the Round Rock Police Department is in the process of further honoring their own, including Whites and City Marshal A.G. Hall, who was also killed in the line of duty. Plans are underway for constructing a permanent Police Officer Memorial at the department's headquarters. This initiative ensures that the memory of their service and sacrifices continues to be eternally etched in the community's consciousness, viscerally reminding citizens and fellow officers alike each time they pass by.
