With cybercrime on the rise, the City of Sacramento is launching an awareness campaign to foster better online habits. In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the City’s Information Technology Department has introduced the Cybersafe Sacramento initiative, a program designed to educate the public on maintaining digital safety. Paolo Tandoc, the City’s Information Security Officer, emphasized the point: "Cybersecurity isn’t just a technical issue, it’s a daily habit," according to a release on the Sacramento City Express. He stressed the impact of individual action, noting that "every click, every login, and every interaction online is an opportunity to either strengthen or weaken our defenses."
The effort is in response to the Public Policy Institute of California's findings that more than three-quarters of California residents are using internet for financial transactions, revealing an array of lucrative targets for cybercriminals. The City is thus pushing for residents to engage in best practices, from spotting phishing attempts to securing Wi-Fi networks at home, resonating Tandoc's call for heightened vigilance, as reported by the Sacramento City Express.
To arm citizens with the knowledge they need, the City has shared actionable tips, such as the importance of employing strong, unique passwords and setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA). They also recommend keeping software and devices up to date and learning how to report cybercrime effectively. These guidelines reflect a core message that cybersecurity is not only about protecting one's own data but also, as Tandoc believes, safeguarding the "community we serve," as per the Sacramento City Express.
