The City of Salisbury is set to embark on significant infrastructure improvements, thanks to a sizeable grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The municipality has been awarded an $850,000 Rural Transformation Grant to renovate the 30,000-square-foot structure at 130 South Main Street, which was previously the Wells Fargo Building. This grant aims to boost not only the building's aesthetics but also its safety and operational systems, including upgrades to lighting, flooring, fire prevention, and temperature control apparatuses.
According to a statement obtained by the City of Salisbury, Mayor Tamara Sheffield expressed gratitude towards the Department of Commerce for their financial assistance, which she believes will "directly support downtown revitalization efforts." Keisha Coxe, the Parks and Recreation Director who spearheaded the grant application, shared this sentiment, anticipating how these funds will allow to quickly alter its community services and meeting places for the city's inhabitants.
The project marks the city's second occasion to successfully secure aid through the Rural Grant Transformation Fund, following an $800,000 award they received in 2022 for the purchase of the building in question. This fund routinely offers grants and specialized guidance for local governments, with a focus on projects that foster community and economic development—ranging from building renovations and public infrastructure improvements to downtown revitalization initiatives.
An announcement reflected the administration's planning timeline, revealing that design plans should be completed by Spring 2026. Construction is set to commence in the following summer and is expected to stretch over a year. This timeline suggests that Salisbury residents can anticipate a vastly improved downtown space by late 2027. This new grant is part of a larger movement by Governor Josh Stein, who this year approved over $9.8 million across 21 grant requests for local governments to uplift various communities’ economic durability.
