The City of Salisbury will open its new Fire Station 3 on October 15 at 150 Mahaley Avenue, with a ceremony at 11 a.m. and public tours from 2 to 4 p.m. The new facility replaces the aging station at 1604 West Innes Street, built in 1956, which faced structural problems due to unstable soil. The station will serve the northwest area of Salisbury, including nearby colleges, medical centers, and residential neighborhoods, according to the City of Salisbury.
The $10 million state-funded project, supported by local state leaders, includes building a new fire station and adding safety upgrades such as ballistic vests, a decontamination facility, and new fire trucks. The station also features decontamination rooms and gear storage to help reduce health risks for firefighters. Mayor Tamara Sheffield said, “This project reflects our city’s commitment to public safety, fiscal responsibility, and long-term planning. Thanks to the support of our state leaders, we were able to replace an aging facility, improve firefighter safety and strengthen emergency services across Salisbury without putting the burden on local taxpayers,” as reported by the City of Salisbury.
Fire Chief Bob Parnell said, “Station 3 has been the backbone of fire protection for Salisbury’s northwest side for nearly 70 years. This new facility not only replaces an outdated building but gives our firefighters the tools, resources, and safe environment they deserve to continue protecting this community at the highest level.” The Salisbury Fire Department, established in 1817, marks the opening as part of its ongoing infrastructure improvements, as stated by the City of Salisbury.
