San Antonio's battle against mailbox theft has spurred a new city council proposal aimed at increasing security measures around cluster mailboxes. Spearheaded by District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito, the plan is designed to install ANSL lighting (All Night Security Lighting) in affected areas and create a task force to address the root causes of mail theft, according to reports from FOX San Antonio.
Councilwoman Alderete Gavito brought the proposal to the Public Safety Committee after her constituents reported repeated incidents of mail theft. "When I first brought this proposal forward in the fall of 2024, it was because residents in district 7 and across the city were getting hit with cluster mailbox theft again and again," Alderete Gavito told FOX San Antonio. Despite being a long-standing issue, last month's arrests of two men in Garden Ridge implicated in swiping mail from cluster mailboxes highlight the ongoing threat.
According to KENS 5, the Public Safety Committee met on Tuesday to evaluate the proposal's viability. It aims not only to brighten up mailbox areas with additional streetlights but also involves assembling a task force. This team will comprise stakeholders like USPS, developers, and council members, all focused on curbing mail-related crimes.
Gavito's dual approach to the issue is a response to constituency concerns about identity theft, missing medications, and a general lack of security. "It's not just mail," she explained, referencing to the far-reaching implications of these crimes on residents' lives. The SAPD is developing a new website to streamline reporting mail theft, a former source of confusion for residents, as informed by FOX San Antonio. The full council will now consider the proposal, signaling a potential shift from repetitive mailbox repairs to proactive theft prevention.
