San Antonio residents in District 5 had the floor on Wednesday night to sound off on Project Marvel, the proposed $1.3 billion Spurs arena that's stirring up a fair bit of local debate. Councilmember Teri Castillo hosted an informative community meeting on October 8, opening the floor to nearly 100 engaged citizens. With the November ballot propositions just around the corner, the aim was to fill the air with clarity and facts, rather than the usual political white noise.
According to the city's official announcement, Castillo's presentation waded through the research and the terms, at the heart which, is a promise of transparency and a pledge that voices from the neighborhood won't just echo unheard in council chambers. Attendees also got to hear different sides of the story, with input from UTSA Professor Emeritus Dr. Heywood T. Sanders, Spurs' Bobby Perez, City Manager Erik Walsh, and CFO Ben Gorzell lending weight to the conversation.
It wasn't just a one-way street, though. The Q&A session that followed turned into a true dialogue, with community members asking pointed questions about where the money's coming from and what's in it for them on the other side. "Our goal was to ensure that residents have access to clear, factual information before heading to the polls," Councilmember Castillo affirmed. "San Antonians deserve transparency and the opportunity to make an informed decision about an investment of this scale," as mentioned on the City of San Antonio website.
