Early this morning, a fire erupted at a vacant apartment complex on Lee Hall Street near Interstate 10 in San Antonio, becoming a challenge for local fire crews due to the building's complex layout. Fox San Antonio reports that the fire started around 12:30 a.m. and featured a series of "add-ons" with overlapping roofs, which complicated the efforts of the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) to contain it.
Responding after midnight, firefighters were immediately met with heavy flames. According to KENS 5, it took the crews working tirelessly for just over two hours to bring the stubborn blaze under control, facing the added difficulty as the structure's design allowed for fire to spread quickly to multiple levels. Forces out by the intensity of the flames, SAFD personnel were compelled to leave the structure due to safety concerns at one point in their battle against the fire.
No injuries have been reported among firefighters or civilians, with both sources confirming the apartment building was unoccupied when the fire started. More than two hours later, the crews got the upper hand and extinguished the fire by around 2:30 a.m., bringing much needed relief to the neighborhood and preventing potential spread to nearby structures.
Authorities are now intent on unraveling the mystery behind the ignition, working to determine the cause of the fire in the now-charred skeleton of what used to be a series of apartments. Firefighters finally gained control of the situation as reported by KENS 5, which noted that the building appeared to be vacant during the incident.
