As part of his continuous efforts, Governor Abbott has designated the entire month of October as Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month, with a special week from October 12-18 aimed at increasing preventive education among young Texans. In line with these efforts, an interactive map by the Texas Department of State Health Services has been launched, which enables Texans to locate where to obtain the overdose-reversing drug Naloxone. The same map also reflects the broader scope of Texas' "One Pill Kills" campaign.
This year, the state has reported a significant drop in fentanyl poisoning deaths, showcasing a decline of over 42% compared to the year prior, a sharp turnaround from the 600% rise in such incidents between 2019 and 2023, a period which saw more than 7,000 Texan lives claimed by the crisis; these figures were shared in a new data release by the DSHS. The marked reduction in fentanyl-related fatalities comes off the back of what had been a harrowing half-decade surge in these preventable deaths.
