The steak-and-seafood destination that's anchored downtown Buda's dining scene since 2023 is reinventing itself. Taste on Main, the upscale restaurant inside a century-old former post office building at 116 Main Street, is transforming into TasTe Italian Steakhouse, a concept pairing Texas beef with classic Italian flavors, with the new identity set to launch on September 24, 2026.
The pivot traces back to something surprisingly simple: a lasagna. According to Send2Press Newswire, Taste on Main's culinary team created a lasagna for Monday nights that became the beginning of a new culinary direction for the restaurant. That dish is now credited with setting the whole rebrand in motion, as the kitchen leaned further into handmade pasta, focaccia, and other Italian classics alongside the steaks that built the restaurant's reputation.
Taste on Main is a longtime restaurant in Buda, Texas, run by husband-and-wife hospitality operators Tamra and Travis Tindol, who also own Hays City Store & Ice House in nearby Driftwood, according to City Lifestyle. The couple purchased Hays City Store in 2015 before launching Taste on Main in Buda as their second concept, giving them an established track record in Hays County hospitality before attempting this transition.
What's Staying, What's Changing on the Menu
The restaurant opened originally on February 15, 2023, and operated for roughly three and a half years as an upscale steak and seafood spot before initiating this year's rebrand, per CultureMap Austin. The dining room itself is undergoing a transformation to match the new direction, but the kitchen isn't starting from scratch — the restaurant has a chef-driven culinary program that's simply being redirected toward Italian technique.
Not everything is changing. Per the seed report, Taste on Main is preserving its celebrated steaks, its East Coast oyster bar, and its craft cocktail and allocated bourbon program even as it adopts the new name. The wine list is expanding to include Italian varietals, and the restaurant will offer half-price wine bottles on Mondays — the same night that gave rise to the lasagna that started this whole shift.

Buda itself has been growing fast enough to support that bet. Still, downtown Buda's restaurant scene has seen real churn recently. The rebrand comes just weeks after Cajun restaurant MudBugs closed its doors after six years on Main Street, one of several closures that have reshaped the historic district in recent years, including Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ in 2024. Meanwhile, the city broke ground this summer on a $13.9 million first phase of Garison Memorial Park, a 40-acre project along Onion Creek just north of Main Street that's expected to bring more trail users and visitors within walking distance of downtown storefronts.
For Taste on Main's owners, the timing lines up an established restaurant, a supportive municipal tax deal, and a growing customer base against a downtown in flux — a combination the Tindols appear to be betting will carry TasTe Italian Steakhouse well past its September 24 debut.
