A tragic escalation of a domestic situation led to the fatal shooting of a man outside a West Side business in San Antonio. Richardo Michael Haymon, 40, has been charged with murder after the death of 36-year-old Ricardo Contreras, according to details from an arrest affidavit.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning before 3 a.m. at a Chevron gas station located on Historic Old Highway 90 and South Acme Road. Contreras reportedly attempted to flee towards the store when he was shot. According to a KENS 5 report, upon their arrival, officers found Contreras with a gunshot wound to his head and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators at the site discovered five shell casing lots in neighboring parking lots and bullet holes in a vehicle believed to be driven by the victim. The vehicle was registered to Contreras' mother, as noted in the same affidavit. The woman who called 9-1-1 was present during the altercation and has been identified as both Contreras’ girlfriend and Haymon's ex-girlfriend, someone who had previously reported Haymon for family violence in June, per a statement obtained by KSAT.
The complex dynamics between the individuals had a harrowing conclusion when, during a verbal argument, "Haymond allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at Contreras," as an official affidavit stated to KSAT. The woman attempted to separate the men during their argument, but the confrontation resulted in gunfire. She further told investigators that Contreras was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Subsequently, Haymon was taken into custody and faces a charge of murder.
