In the wake of a deadly incident involving a student from John Jay High School, District 6 Councilmember Ric Galvan has put a spotlight on the urgency to thoroughly to examine the traffic and pedestrian safety issues in the Marbach Road area. The student, named Jose Flores III, lost his life in a tragic accident that speedily mobilized city officials to reevaluate the safety measures in place, particularly in school zones. Galvan met with the deceased's father earlier this week and expressed a profound sense of responsibility. "No family should ever have to experience a loss like this — especially not on a street that we know needs to be safe for every student," Galvan said, according to a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio's official website.
The councilmember's response includes a request for immediate collaboration between multiple city departments and the Northside ISD. They aim to identify a variety of short-term and long-term improvements that could be enacted to prevent future accidents. These measures include activating school zone flashing lights during high school lunch hours and reviewing the overall street design. Galvan also emphasizes the development and implementation of safe pedestrian routes to ensure the journey to and from John Jay High School is unmarred by the threat of vehicular harm.
Among the supporters for this initiative are District 4 Councilmember Edward Mungia and Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, who have signaled their readiness to aid in this critical deployment. This multisector approach underscores the gravity and immediacy with which city officials are treating the safety of students and the public. "Our students and families deserve safe, accessible streets — and that begins with action, not delay," highlighted Galvan, according to the City of San Antonio's official website.
