In an exciting update for San Antonio's District 2, Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez spearheaded the grand re-opening of Healy Murphy Park, showcasing the results of collaboration and community investment. The re-opening, funded by the 2023 District 2 Capital Improvement Program, marks a notable transformation of the park into a street art haven.
Made possible through the joint efforts of the District 2 Office, Parks & Recreation Department, Arts & Culture Department, and the San Antonio Street Art Initiative (SASA), the newly minted park now gleams with ten original murals designed by local artists. "Healy Murphy Park’s transformation is a testament to what’s possible when art, community, and public space come together," McKee-Rodriguez told the official city website. The Councilmember underscored the culmination of creativity and resilience which now stands as not just a place to gather, but a living canvas reflecting the Eastside's narrative.
Among the featured artists are District 2's own Manola and Maria, Scotch!, and Kat Cadena along with San Antonio talents such as Josiah Harris and Ana Hernandez-Burwell. Aimed to be a labor of love, this initiative draws deep roots from a community-driven aspiration. "I’m deeply grateful to the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, our District 2 community, and every artist who helped turn this vision into reality," continued the Councilmember, as per the statement on the city’s website.
The rejuvenation of Healy Murphy Park breathes new life into a space that has served as a communal hub since the 1970s, now equipped with updated infrastructure and the embrace of street art in its core design—a first for a City of San Antonio park. This endeavor folds into the broader vision for District 2, which has seen the birth of Village Row Park in 2023 and anticipates more community spaces from investments through the Inner City TIRZ and the 2025, and 2026 Capital Improvement Programs.
