The Sandy City Police Department, in its continuous effort to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of domestic violence, has emphasized that the trauma extends beyond the direct victims. Children, often silent witnesses to these harrowing experiences, are left with invisible wounds that can manifest as developmental delays, health problems, anxiety, and, in some instances, propensities for future violence.
In observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the department is taking active steps to not only bring attention to the subject but to foster a community-based response aimed at safeguarding the youth. "Domestic violence doesn’t just affect adults—it leaves lasting impacts on children who witness or experience it," shares a social media post by the Sandy City Police Department. The department encourages families to openly discuss the problem with children, to devise safety plans, and to seek trusted support.
As part of their initiative, the Sandy Justice Court now features a poignant display of pinwheels. Each pinwheel stands as a representation of a child that the agency has served, a symbol not only of their resilience but also as a hope for more peaceful futures. "Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing home," states the Sandy City Police Department, driving the point home that the community must collectively stand up for the most vulnerable.
