This past week, an 18-year-old Santa Rosa teen found themselves on the wrong side of a joke. Following a social media bomb threat that targeted a school outside Sonoma County, authorities swiftly moved to investigate the case, leading to the individual's arrest. After receiving a report on Tuesday at 11:36 PM, Sonoma County deputies were able to track the origin of the threat back to the county's own territory.
Identified as Ryan Sweeney by the Sonoma Sheriff's Office, the teen told deputies the post was intended as a jest. Despite the claimed humor, law enforcement took the threat seriously, especially given the current climate of heightened school security concerns. Their investigation, which included a search of Sweeney's residence, confirmed the absence of any bomb-making materials.
The severity of the situation didn't elude the authorities; humor or not, such threats carry weighty consequences. Sweeney was booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of making criminal threats after the joke that clearly went too far. He was later released on $30,000 bail, underlining the costly nature of such lapses in judgment, with criminal records being no laughing matter.
