Scottsdale has ramped up its commitment to keeping its streets safe with the formation of a new team digging into public safety matters. The recently developed Subcommittee on Community Safety held its first gathering on September 25 to start the conversation on how to improve the lives of its residents.
Essentially the new crew, which includes Vice Mayor Adam Kwasman and Council members Jan Dubauskas and Kathy Littlefield, is looking to pluck out community nuisances and make each neighborhood a bit more livable. "The City Council takes community safety very seriously. We are committed to providing the very best public safety possible to Scottsdale residents," Councilwoman Jan Dubauskas, who was unanimously chosen to lead the subcommittee, told the Scottsdale City News. The council members will be assisted by City Manager Greg Caton, Interim City Attorney Luis Santaella, and Police Chief Joe LeDuc in their efforts.
The game plan for the subcommittee includes a variety of issues, from curbing community nuisances to diving into the nuts and bolts of policing and firefighting operations in Scottsdale. They'll also be tackling compensation strategies for law enforcement and dispatchers, crime, and fire stats. That's not all—the group hinted at possible discussions on establishing a Scottsdale probation department and ramping up the prosecution game.
With this deeper focus on public safety, the group hopes to prep detailed discussions on these important issues—presentations and debates that will eventually find their way to the full City Council for further exploration. "Public safety is a foundational element for developing and maintaining a thriving community," City Manager Greg Caton shared at the meeting. As the group gears up for their next meeting during the week of Nov. 10, Scottsdale residents interested in the play-by-play of local governance and law enforcement practices can keep tabs by visiting the city's official website.
Scottsdale citizens who wish to get a front-row seat to upcoming public safety strategies and initiatives can attend future subcommittee gatherings. Details on meetings and agenda topics are available on the city's website - ScottsdaleAZ.gov - by searching for "council subcommittees."
