Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and Police Chief Shon Barnes announced that the Seattle Police Department is close to hiring its 150th officer this year, a total higher than the previous two years combined. “Our comprehensive plan to rebuild the police department is showing real results, and we will be thrilled to welcome the 150th officer to our ranks this year,” according to the Seattle Police Department.
Seattle Police Department received over 3,300 applications in 2025, up from 2,700 in 2024 and 1,300 in 2023, aided by recruitment campaigns like the “As You Are” initiative. The campaign features diverse officers sharing their experiences, and social media and streaming platforms help Seattle Police Department reach a wider audience and support retention of existing personnel.
Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said, "After speaking with dozens of recruits, it’s clear we’re not only getting top talent but we’re attracting people who are dedicated to keeping the peace." Seattle Police Department has joined the federal SkillBridge Program, and 22 officers have entered the department through this program as of August 2025.
