Senator Adam Pugh, R-Edmond, has introduced legislation to increase funding for school security in Oklahoma. Senate Bill 1189 proposes adding $50 million annually to the School Security Revolving Fund for the next three years. Established in 2023, the fund supports school districts with safety measures such as hiring school resource officers and improving security systems.
According to a press release from Oklahoma Senate, schools have used the funding to strengthen safety protocols across the state. Pugh emphasized the importance of ensuring that schools remain safe environments for students and staff.
Each district has received about $285,000 from the program to support security officers or make facility upgrades. To qualify for funding, districts must complete a risk and vulnerability assessment from the Oklahoma School Security Institute (OSSI) by July 1, 2026.
If approved, Senate Bill 1189 would continue to provide stable funding for school safety initiatives throughout Oklahoma.
