An unexpected airstrip briefly took shape along Interstate 15 early this morning when a small plane, grappling with mechanical troubles, executed an emergency landing on the freeway linking Las Vegas and Mesquite. The Nevada Highway Patrol and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported the incident around 9 a.m., and, fortunately, not a single injury was recorded in the course of the rather unconventional landing.
Specifically, a single-engine Cessna 172 found itself in a dire situation with engine issues compelling the pilot, having deployed their landing gear, to bring the craft down to earth between mile markers 80 to 88, as detailed by the Nevada Highway Patrol. Desperate to return to the ground, the pilot managed to safely land on I-15, avoiding what could have been a disastrous interruption in the flow of traffic on a rush hour morning.
NHP led the investigation into the circumstances of the aerial misadventure, with FOX5 stating that the aircraft ended up obstructing both the northbound and southbound lanes. Responding quickly to the incident, law enforcement officials sprang into action, redirecting the flow of vehicles and adjusting the area's traffic patterns to accommodate the unexpected highway obstruction. “The pilot safely landed without causing any injuries,” NHP confirmed in a report.
The plane, registered to Ace of Spades Aviation, a Las Vegas-based LLC, according to records from the Federal Aviation Administration obtained by News 3, landed safely, and troopers and officers remained on the scene as crews assessed the plane on the shoulder. Amid ongoing concerns, including those sparked by the prevailing government shutdown that might affect communication, News 3 reached out to the FAA for further information. Trooper Shawn Haggstrom with Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol, expressed that “The pilot reported having engine issues and a landing gear out,” in a statement that clarifies the precipitating factors leading to the highway touch down. As the investigation continues and officials work towards a full understanding of the incident, traffic has resumed its normal flow along I-15.
