In Sonoma County, a courier involved in an elaborate cash delivery con has been apprehended, the Sonoma Sheriff's Office reports. Over the past few weeks, residents of the Windsor area have been targeted by a scam in which they were duped into believing their bank accounts had been compromised. Perpetrators, posing as federal officials, convinced victims to withdraw funds and hand them over to couriers for "safekeeping," per the Sonoma Sheriff.
Responding to this wave of deception, the Sonoma County Property Crime Detectives orchestrated a sting operation. They lay in wait for the courier, identified as Zhengning Chen of Oakland. According to the Sonoma Sheriff on social media, upon Chen's arrival and subsequent collection of the cash package, detectives, in conjunction with Windsor Police Deputies, moved in for the arrest.
The arrested individual now faces charges and is currently held at the county jail, where he has been assigned a significantly enhanced bail amount of $250,000.
