In a swift response to a violent episode in Springfield, the city's Police Homicide Unit has moved to charge a man already detained on prior warrants with murder. This development follows after a tragic incident that left one man dead from a stab wound.
On a Monday night, police were called to the 2800 block of Main Street around 10:35 p.m. on reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male victim visibly suffering from a stab injury. Despite being quickly transported to Baystate, the victim was unable to outlive his wounds, ultimately succumbing to them. In a calculated move, under the watch of Captain Trent Duda, the Homicide Unit began an investigation in parallel with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.
The investigative efforts quickly bore fruit. On that same Monday night, as detectives canvassed the scene, news came through concerning a potential suspect, 36-year-old Hector Lopez, found just blocks away on the 2600 block of Main Street. Holding an outstanding warrant, officers didn't hesitate to take Lopez into custody.
Persisting in their inquiries, homicide detectives determined they had sufficient cause to not just hold, but to also formally request a murder charge be levied against Lopez for the stabbing. This was executed on Tuesday morning, just hours following the fateful event. according to a Springfield Police Department news release.
Lopez now awaits his arraignment, which is set for today in Springfield District Court. He faces a series of charges including murder, and in connection with the previously issued warrant, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, and a miscellaneous motor vehicle equipment violation.
