Louisiana State Rep. Julie Emerson, a Republican from Carencro, has announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate, setting up a challenge against incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy. According to WWLTV, Emerson, 37, chairs the House Ways and Means Committee and launched her campaign with a focus on leadership and restoring public confidence.
Emerson has sponsored major legislation, including a tax overhaul and the LA GATOR private school program. As reported by Louisiana Illuminator, she stated that the state’s future now feels more promising. She joins a growing Republican field that includes State Treasurer John Fleming and other contenders seeking conservative support following Cassidy’s impeachment vote on former President Donald Trump and the January 6 events.
Cassidy holds a $10.6 million campaign fund and backing from GOP figures, while Emerson’s campaign appeals to Trump-aligned voters through references to recent political milestones. The outlet also highlights Emerson’s record on tax reforms and her role in efforts to shift Louisiana from an open to a closed party primary system, as Nola.com reported.
Elected at age 27 as the youngest Republican woman in the Louisiana Legislature, Emerson holds a degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and an MBA from the University of South Carolina. She previously served as an adviser in U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins’ congressional campaign.
