A woman was left in critical condition Wednesday morning after gunfire erupted between two motorists near Airline Drive and Veterans Boulevard in Metairie, according to authorities. The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m., and one person was taken into custody shortly afterward for questioning in connection with the incident.
According to WWLTV.com, the woman was taken to a local hospital and listed in critical condition by authorities. Officials have not released additional information about what led to the confrontation between the two drivers, nor have they described the circumstances of the encounter that turned violent. No formal charges had been announced as of the outlet's report, and the person taken into custody was still being questioned rather than formally arrested.
Because Metairie is an unincorporated community in East Jefferson Parish with no municipal police department of its own, the investigation falls entirely to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Joseph P. Lopinto III. That agency holds primary jurisdiction over the case and has yet to say whether the person questioned will face charges.
A Corridor Already Familiar With Gun Violence
The stretch of roadway where Wednesday's shooting happened sits along two of East Jefferson Parish's busiest commercial arteries. Airline Drive, also known as U.S. 61, and Veterans Memorial Boulevard together carry between 35,000 and 55,000 vehicles a day near their major intersections, according to Blip Billboards, meaning the early-morning confrontation played out along one of the most heavily traveled routes connecting Metairie, Kenner, and the regional airport.
It is not the only violent incident to strike the area recently. Jefferson Parish deputies investigated a separate fatal shooting along Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie in July, detaining a 20-year-old suspect shortly after that incident, per a report cited by the sheriff's office. Hoodline also previously covered a shooting near Elmwood that likewise began as an argument before escalating into gunfire under JPSO's jurisdiction.
Open Questions Investigators Still Face
Several key details remain unresolved as the investigation continues. It is not yet known whether Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office will formally book the person taken into custody, or what specific charges, if any, prosecutors might pursue. Louisiana law includes enhanced penalties for shootings connected to vehicles: discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle with intent to injure, harm, or frighten another person is a felony carrying a mandatory 5 to 10 years at hard labor without benefit of probation, according to attorney Stephen D. Hebert. Separately, aggravated battery committed with a dangerous weapon is classified under state law as a crime of violence, carrying up to 10 years in prison and fines as high as $5,000, per the Louisiana State Legislature.
Investigators have also not said whether dashcam footage or surveillance video from nearby businesses captured the confrontation, and the woman's updated medical condition has not been made public beyond the initial critical designation. Officials have not described what sparked the dispute between the two motorists in the first place.
A State With a Road-Rage Problem
The shooting adds to a troubling statewide pattern. Louisiana ranked among the top three worst states nationally for road rage incidents in 2026 after holding the No. 1 spot in both 2024 and 2025, according to research from ConsumerAffairs. Nationally, there were 883 road rage incidents involving firearms in 2025, resulting in 114 deaths and hundreds of injuries, per an analysis from the Everytown Support Fund.
Researchers with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety have found that 96% of surveyed drivers admitted to engaging in aggressive driving behaviors over a 12-month span, with roughly 11% escalating to violence. Louisiana also enacted permitless concealed carry legislation in 2024, allowing eligible adults 18 and older to carry concealed handguns in vehicles without a state permit or mandatory training, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.
Metairie has seen other high-profile shooting cases draw scrutiny in recent months. Civil rights attorneys filed an appeal in July with the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals over a fatal 2021 police shooting along Airline Drive, a case Hoodline has tracked through the courts. For now, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office investigation into Wednesday's shooting remains active, with no charges announced and the injured woman's condition still critical.
