An unsettling episode unfolded at Howard Middle School in Orange County, involving a substitute teacher and lewd conduct in the presence of students. Daniel Huerta, 27, was arrested following allegations that he engaged in inappropriate behavior during class time. Reports by WESH indicated that students witnessed Huerta viewing explicit images on his phone and sexually touching himself.
The accounts were corroborated by several students who detailed seeing Huerta fixated on nude photos and laughing disturbingly, described by one as a "witches laugh." Students, from their desks or whilst fetching a restroom pass, were able to observe Huerta's phone screen and his subsequent actions. Based on these reports, administrators at Howard Middle School promptly informed the Orlando Police Department of the incident.
An investigation ensued, and an OPD officer conducted interviews with the students, who positively identified Huerta in a photo lineup. As per WESH, evidence from Huerta's home, including the clothing he was wearing on the day of the incident, further implicated him.
Following his arrest, Huerta was charged with one count of offenses against students by authority figures and one count of an unnatural or lascivious act. Meanwhile, the entities involved have taken quick action to address the situation. A statement from Kelly Education, the staffing agency through which Huerta was hired, declared, "The safety and well-being of the students we serve is our highest priority," as reported by FOX 35 Orlando. The company asserted its cooperation with the ongoing investigation and emphasized its comprehensive background check procedures, which Huerta previously cleared.
There is yet no information available regarding whether Huerta was involved in any similar incidents prior to working at Howard Middle School.
